“Success Begins From The Inside Out!”

Gratefulness is the key to a happy life that we hold in our hands, because if we are not grateful, then no matter how much we have we will not be happy — because we will always want to have something else or something more.” ~ Brother David Steinol-Rast

What are you grateful for?

Are you grateful that you are alive.

Yesterday, a lone gunman opened fire in a movie theater and, last I heard, he killed 12 people and injured 58. It is being called “The Shootings in Colorado,” “The Movie Theater Massacre” and “The ‘Dark Knight’ Rampage”. The horror those theater-goers must have felt as they ran in terror!

Our President, Barack Obama, made this comment about the rampage:

“If there’s anything to take away from this tragedy it’s a reminder that life is very fragile. Our time here is limited, and it is precious…and what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it’s not the the trivial things which so often consume us and our daily lives. Ultimately, it’s how we choose to treat one other and how we love one another.”

What are you grateful for?

Gratefulness is appreciating what you already have. It’s about giving thanks. The idea is that when you focus on what you are grateful for, instead of problems, challenges and faults, you’ll get more blessings to be grateful for.

Gratefulness is what I felt a couple of days ago when I came close to being in a car accident.

I was driving on a 2-lane highway here in Connecticut during the morning rush hour when it suddenly started raining. It was coming down so hard that all I could see were the tail lights of the car that was ahead of me. We all slowed down. We couldn’t stop moving because the highway was crowded, we couldn’t get off the highway because the next exit was 2 miles away, and we couldn’t pull over because the road was too narrow. In just a few minutes, parts of the highway were already flooding.

It was very scary. I was nervous, and right away I started praying.

Then the rain stopped as suddenly as it started.

A little while afterwards, the car ahead of me changed lanes, and I could see that the car that was ahead of him had sped into a flooded area of the highway and lost control. The car was swerving, and then it started to spin. I immediately slowed down before getting to the flooded area and checked if I could change lanes. By the time that I got over into the other lane, the car was only about 6 feet ahead of me, and it was “crossways” in the lane, with the driver side facing oncoming traffic. The driver in back of me barely avoided that car by driving onto the grass.

I was shaken and terrified. That was way to close. I thanked God for helping me see that car in time to change lanes safely.

I wonder how the driver of the affected car felt as he saw my car getting closer and closer. How terrifying that must have been. Was he praying as my car approached his?

I am so grateful that we made it through that safely. What are you grateful for?

Things you can do to develop a habit of gratefulness:

1. Set aside an intentional time for thanksgiving and reflection.
2. Start with one thing you are thankful for and write it down or say it out loud.
3. Enlist a gratefulness partner to help you remember to express gratitude.
4. Give thanks at the beginning and end of your day.
5. Send a note or card of gratitude.
6. Write in your journal about what you are grateful for.

We don’t know where or when our lives will end. So, we need to be grateful for each and every day. We need to let the special people in our lives know that we are grateful for them. We need to express gratitude for the little things, not just the big things.

“When you practice gratefulness, there is a sense of respect towards others.” ~ The Dalai Lama
