What is Google Analytics?

If you are a blog owner, you’ve probably have a Google Analytics Summary in your dashboard. Have you wondered what that summary is telling you?

That summary gives you statistics like pages/visit, bounce rate, average time on site, percent new visitors. Here’s what they mean?

Those stats measure initial engagement on your site.

–Pages/Visit – this tells you how many pages were visited on average per visit.

–Bounce Rate – this tells you the % of visitors who leave after viewing just one page.

–Average Time on Site – this tells you the duration of the average visit.

–% New Visitors – this tracks how many new visitors are coming to you site.

According to an Inc.com article, a 50% bounce rate is average. Your bounce rate should not exceed 60%, and if it surpasses 80%, you have a major problem. Your bounce rate will vary dramatically, depending on where your traffic is coming from.

You can get duration stats for popular sites (those with more than 1,000 visitors/day) by using Google’s Adplanner (www.google.com/adplanner) and use those as a benchmark (something to compare your duration stats to).

Monitoring your stats regularly will give you a starting point for improvement.

Google PageRank Updates

Every 3-4 months, Google rolls out a new pagerank update. The latest update was on May 3. So, check your PR and see if yours improved or was downgraded.

It is possible that your site was penalized for doing something wrong, but it is also possible that the sites linking to you were affected so those links were devalued. The best advice is for you to continue building your site with valuable content and quality links.

Not to worry. You have 3 months before the next update to improve your link profile. Check out my posts on linking strategies:
