Create a Facebook Fan Page

A Non-Techie’s Guide!

Social Media Marketing Strategy article–

This is the final part of this four-part social media marketing strategy article where I share some insights I gained by creating a fan page that can help make it an easier process for you. If any of this overwhelms you, you will at least gain some understanding of what is involved, and you can always contact me for help.

Here’s what we have covered so far in this series:

Part 1: Introduction/About Facebook and Deciding Between Creating a Fan Page or Group
Part 2: The Basics of How to Create a Fan Page and How to “Unlink” Your Fan Page From Your Profile
Part 3: What Applications Should You Put On Your Fan Page and How to Customize a Landing Tab…and Why

Now, we’ll cover….

Part 4: How Do You Build a Community, How Do You Launch Your Fan Page and How Do You Add a Facebook Badge

A. How Do You Build a Community?

Here are some suggested steps to follow in building your fan page community:

1. Use a Facebook ad to get fans. Facebook ads can be targeted by demographics like location, age, sex and education and keywords. (The next section explains how to set up a Facebook ad.)

2. Invite your Twitter followers to become a fan of your page. Add your fan page link to your direct message welcome.

3. Check your fan page regularly for new activity. Post a conversational update and content at least once daily. Update your page regularly with upcoming events, photos, and promotions. Great sites for pre-tested content are: Alltop.com and Digg.com.

4. Add a fan page badge to your website or newsletter. See details later in this article.

5. You can send some or all of your fans messages by clicking “Send an Update to Fans” link. It is located on the “Edit Page” toward the right, in the “Promote Your Page” section.

B. How Do You Launch Your Fan Page?

First, you may want to invite friends to your page. By clicking the “Suggest to Friends” link below your picture, you can send an invite to friends as seen in the screen shot below.

Facebook Ads

Then you can use Facebook ads to reach your target audience and increase your fan base. Go to: http://www.facebook.com/ads/create/ or click the green “Promote Your Page” link at the top of the “Edit Page” and input the requested information. Facebook will take you through self-explanatory steps shown in the screen shots below.

Step 1: Design Your Ad

You want to be sure that the landing page meets the expectations created by the ad copy. The more relevant the ad, the more likely someone is to become a fan.

Step 2: Targeting

This is a great feature of Facebook Ads. You have the ability to target the audience based on location, age, birthday, sex, keywords, education, workplace, relationship (single, in a relationship, engaged, married), interested in men or women, language, and connections to different fan pages, groups and events. Then you’ll see an estimate of how many people are in your selected target market.

Step 3: Campaigns and Pricing

In this step, you will be able to set a daily budget for spending on your ad. You will also be asked to decide if you want to run your ad continuously starting today or to run it only during specified dates.

You will then decide if you want to pay for impressions or pay for clicks. Impressions are the number of times your ad shows up on the profiles of people in your target market, and clicks are the number of times people actually click the link in your ad to come to your fan page. I recommend that you select “pay for clicks.”

You’ll also be given a suggested bid range. Some experts say placing a bid toward the low bid in the range will get you enough clicks. It really depends on your goals. Keep in mind that you will be able to check your results regularly to see if you should adjust your bid to get more clicks.

C. How Do You Add a Facebook Badge to Your Blog?

If you have a blog, a great way to promote your fan page is to add a Facebook badge.

Here are the steps to add a badge to your blog:

Edit Page > Promote with a Fan Box > Facebook Page Badge

1. Click the “Edit Page” link under your picture.

2. Toward the right on the next page, in the section right above your Admin Info (be sure to have at least one other person be an admin as your backup), you will see “Promote your page.” Don’t click the green “Promote Your Page” link at the top of the page. That takes you to advertising.

Then select “Promote with Fan box.”

3. On the next page, choose “Facebook Page Badge.” Here’s the screen shot.

I hope this information gets you off to a good start. It should at least make you more comfortable with making updates. Please post a comment on my fan page if you need any help or have any questions.
